Village by the Sea in Brittany
by Odilon Redon
by Odilon Redon
A sandy shore gives way to blue water, with a small village of white and brown buildings clustered in the distance. Pointed roofs catch the light beneath an azure sky. The brushwork is soft and textured, the colors natural rather than fantastical. This is observation, not imagination.
One of Redon's earliest surviving oil sketches, painted around 1880 before he turned to his famous dark "noirs" charcoal works. This Impressionist-style plein air study shows a different side of the artist: working outdoors, capturing light and atmosphere directly from nature. Now at the National Gallery of Art.
A calm, coastal scene with a classic palette of blues, whites, and earth tones. The intimate scale suits smaller spaces: a bathroom, hallway, or reading corner. A quieter choice than Redon's Symbolist work, offering warmth without strangeness.
