Large Vase with Flowers
by Odilon Redon
by Odilon Redon
A rich bouquet rises from a deep blue vase: large rounded blossoms, smaller trumpet-shaped flowers, green foliage, and floating blue petals that seem to drift weightlessly upward. The background dissolves into soft hazes of gray, pink, and teal. Nothing here obeys the laws of a typical still life. The flowers feel imaginary, almost fantastical.
Painted during Redon's late period, after his transition from dark monochrome "noirs" to vivid color. This is less a still life than a poetic meditation on nature. The influence of his friend, botanist Armand Clavaud, shows in the botanical sensitivity, but the rendering is dreamlike, interior. Now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
A statement piece for dining rooms, entryways, or anywhere you want vibrant color with depth. The dark vase grounds the exuberant blooms, preventing the piece from feeling too sweet. Works particularly well in spaces with neutral walls — the painting provides all the color a room needs.
